Frequently asked questions

Questions about syncing Garmin dives into the SSI (MySSI) logbook.

Will this change dives I already have in SSI?

No. It only adds dives; it never edits or deletes the ones already there. The scan compares both sides and finds the dives that exist in Garmin but not in SSI, and leaves everything else alone. A dive is considered the same one when it is on the same day, the maximum depth is within 1.5 m, and the entry time is the closest match. Combined with a ledger in our own database, any single Garmin dive is written to SSI exactly once.

Can you see my Garmin password?

No. Your Garmin password never passes through us — you sign in on Garmin's own page, and we only receive an authorisation token that lets us read your dives. You can revoke it at any time with "Unlink" on the overview page.

Do I have to save my SSI password?

No. When you link SSI you can leave "save password" unchecked, in which case the password lives only in memory for that session and is gone when you close the browser. The cost is typing it again each time you sync. Saving it is required for background checks, because you are not there when they run. Saved passwords are encrypted and deleted when you unlink.

If a sync writes something wrong, can I undo it?

Yes. A full backup is taken before every write, and one click restores the state from before it. That backup is not just the fields you see on the form — it is a complete snapshot of every existing dive. More importantly: if the backup does not succeed, the write never starts, so you cannot end up half-changed and unable to get back.

Which Garmin devices are supported?

Any device whose dives show up in Garmin Connect, such as the Descent series. We read Garmin's own dive data, so there is no model list and no file for you to export.

Are freedives synced too?

Yes. Both scuba and freediving are supported, and each dive is written with the correct SSI dive type. Every row in the list is marked Scuba or Free, and you decide dive by dive what to sync.

Are dive sites matched automatically?

They are suggested, but you make the final choice — we do not guess for you. We take the dive's GPS coordinates and find the nearest few sites already in your own SSI account for you to pick from. If nothing is close, nothing is suggested: that dive is marked "site needed" and will not be submitted until you choose one. A wrong site is worse than a blank one, so this step is deliberately not automated.

What happens to dives a shop or instructor has already verified?

Nothing at all. Verified dives are never overwritten, never deleted, and never rebuilt as a duplicate alongside. Those records carry a dive centre's sign-off; touching them would destroy your certification record. The list marks verified dives with a shield.

Why do I have to fill in some fields myself?

Because Garmin does not record them, and we will not invent a number. Tank pressure, tank volume and weights are the three groups a dive computer cannot measure. You can type them on the confirmation screen or leave them blank. Anything you type is marked "entered by you", clearly separated from the data that came from Garmin.

How do I know a dive was written correctly?

Each dive is read back from SSI immediately after it is written and compared. If it does not match, the remaining writes stop and you are told which dive had the problem, rather than carrying on. The sync history page shows what was written each time and whether verification passed.

Can I take my data with me?

Yes. The settings page exports CSV or UDDF at any time. UDDF is the interchange format used across diving software, so it imports directly into Subsurface and others. Deleting your account removes everything on our side; your SSI logbook is unaffected, because that is your SSI account, not our data.

Is this an official Garmin or SSI service?

No. SSI Sync is an independent personal tool with no partnership with either company. Garmin and SSI are trademarks of their respective owners and are used here only to describe what this service connects to.

Does it cost anything?

No. It is free to use, with no ads. Site analytics is Google Analytics only, for overall traffic (which pages get read, where visitors arrive from); it cannot see your dive log. The privacy page explains it in full, including how to block it.

What if I forget my password?

Please contact us directly for now. Password reset is switched off because it is not yet wired to a mail service, and telling you "a reset link has been sent" while you wait for mail that never arrives would be worse than saying so plainly. Contact details are on the privacy page.
